Bastrop County Republican Party Co-Host Fundraiser For Smithville Gardens

On Saturday, June 2, 2018, the Bastrop County Democratic and Republican Parties joined forces to host a pancake fundraiser for the Smithville Community Gardens.  Smithville Community Gardens fights food insecurity and encourages healthy nutrition in the community.  They have several gardens in the Smithville community growing produce for the people of Smithville and the surrounding area...

The event raised over $1400 dollars that will be applied to the operating budget of the Smithville Community Gardens.  “The monies will be used to purchase seeds, plants and organic fertilizer to plant cool-weather crops in the fall,” said Judy Bergeron, Board Member.  The event came together in a relatively brief time after Michelle Rutherford, Democrat Precinct Chair 2005 contacted Republican - Chair Elect Dianna Greenwood to see if the Bastrop County Republican Party would be interested in co-hosting the event...

Reaction among the guests was positive with many asking if this would become an annual event. Jim Horton, Gardens Chair said “Events such as the Pancake Breakfast give us an opportunity to share this space with people in the community. I love to see people in the gardens.” It is heartwarming to see many community members understand the importance of this event and what it means when our political parties can work together to benefit the community...
